|Off-Road Car Passes||I recorded this small collection of car passes during a rally section of The Lands End Trial, back in March 2013. The short section of the trial takes drivers off-road, up a steep winding section of Darracott woodland. With my H4n in hand I was able to get in very close proximity to the cars as they made the ascent.||Jack Powell||12||0.061||Vehicle||Free||96||24||–||–||–||–|

|Outward Inversion||Contact mics are delicate creatures. They can give you insights into the most excitable yet unheard facets of a soundscape, and then almost immediately get destroyed by the slightest of impacts. We’re just going to forget about how many incredible captures were thrown out of the running for this library due to such slight disruptions, and instead focus on the positive: these are super flexible sounds. One of our favorite libraries to make because it satisfied the inner tinkerer’s ear, Outward Inversion is our microscope applied to the aural world.||Eiravaein Works||100||0||√||Sound Design||Free||96||24||1||–||WAV||–|

|Rain and Thunder||Rain And Thunder is a free sound library featuring 64 high quality audio samples which were recorded during a spring storm on the streets of Belgrade. The sounds were recorded in 24-bit depth using a portable Edirol R-09 stereo field recorder.

This free sample collection contains all the sound effects you may need in order to evoke the atmosphere of a rainy day in a large city. You can hear the cars passing by on some of the recordings, tires splashing through puddles and people walking around in a hurry. The rest of the audio content was recorded in quieter parts of the city, far from the busy downtown. I’ve also recorded the beautiful sound of raindrops falling on an umbrella, it almost sounds like vinyl noise.
There are also around twenty recordings of distant thunder rumble. These can be mixed with clean recordings of rain, if you need background noise for a movie or an audio project. The coolest part of this sound library though are the samples of seven thunders which struck very close, even too close if you ask me. Those are the most valuable samples in the pack, because recording a storm from such close distance is indeed a very rare opportunity.
The funny thing is that I got a bit scared at one moment, so I turned off the recorder and took shelter inside a building. This is something I regret from today’s perspective. There would have been around five or six more fantastic thunder strike samples if I kept recording that time. Still, at that moment I was pretty sure that staying outside would be too dangerous, so I played it safe.
Play the last sample in the “Heavy Thunder” folder at a loud volume and you’ll understand why I chickened out. It was almost as if the storm was trying to tell me that it ain’t playing around and that it doesn’t really fancy ending up in a free sample pack such as this one.
The majority of the samples in the “Rain” and “Distant Thunder” folders have been edited to loop perfectly. You can easily connect multiple copies of the same audio file in an audio track inside your DAW in order to create infinite rain loops. The provided loops can be used at any tempo and of course there is no need to use time-stretching because the loops do not contain rhythmic content.
The “Heavy Thunder” samples are provided as one-shots. They have long tails, so it’s very easy to layer them on top of a rain loop and get natural sounding results. In the audio example embedded in the sidebar, a single rain sample was looped five times, with four different heavy thunder samples layered on top.

|The Weird Side Samples||The Weird Side Samples is a free collection of glitch samples, weird sound effects and abstract sonic textures produced by Johan Ekelove aka Introspectral. 99Sounds Responsive Top
This free sample library is made up of sounds from the album The Weird Side of the Mundane which has recently been published by Introspectral. You are strongly encouraged to visit the artist’s profile page linked in the article and take a listen to his music.
The author describes this sound collection as “a sonic exploration through hidden worlds afloat on a metaphysical plane”. I was blown away when Johan sent me a preview of these samples and I’m proud of the fact that this fantastic library is the first Artist Series release on 99Sounds. The included samples are sorted into six different folders, as described below.
“Atmospheric” contains some of the more ambient elements from this sound library, as the name suggests.
“Vox” contains weird vocals, morphed and re-synthesised to best describe the undefinable.
“Textures” contains textures, or sonic backdrops, not to be confused with pads or ambient soundscapes, but rather like the texture of a physical surface.
“Movements” is sounds that for one reason or another, did not make it into the “Textures” pack. As the title suggests, these are sounds which are based on movement of some sort.
“Percussive Elements” is more or less what the name suggests. A set of percussive one shot samples with elements of glitch and FSU sound processing.
“Tech” is the term used here to describe various “one shots”, often of a somewhat glitchy character. This is the final piece of the puzzle and also the biggest pack in the collection.

This free sample collection provides a handy toolbox of sound effects suitable for use in various music genres such as techno, house, dubstep, etc. The samples are clearly labeled by type, so picking the right type of transition sound effect for the project you’re working is almost too easy. Perhaps the coolest part of the library are the sidechained white noise sweeps.
